This intense painting break is ideal for any level of artist, whether you are just setting out or trying to take your painting to the next level. Les Darlow will be explaining pastels, papers, composition, tonal values, colour temperature and depth of field and why all these have such impact on your final works.

It will be based in the Lake District, in the little Cumbrian village of Ormside which is in the Vale of Eden. The first day will be spent in the hall learning techniques in pastel. Given reasonable weather conditions the second and third day you will be spent painting En Plein Air, and capturing the wonderful scenery around this area. If the weather is unfavourable, you will have full use of Village Hall to learn to paint and explore this magnificent medium.

On the Tuesday evening from 7-9pm Les Darlow will be presenting a demonstration in pastel and mixed media at Ormside Village Hall. On the Wednesday you will be learning techniques in pastel using various pastels, papers and mixed media. Les Darlow will teach you how to interpret the landscape and be very creative in the process using various techniques such as unification of colour altering colour temperatures. On Thursday and Friday, given favourable weather conditions, you will be visiting local scenes to create some amazing Landscape Paintings. If the weather does not comply and you need to work inside, then you will paint in the Village Hall and cover more techniques in pastel working from photographs.

You will look at working from photographs and how to interpret rather than copy and also address the things to alter and change whilst painting En Plein Air and the benefits. This is an intense 3 day workshop where Les Darlow's intention is to teach each student as much as possible in the time you have. He will teach the best practice of pastel and how to achieve the best results using certain papers.

I was born in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1961, and trained as a technical and Scientific Illustrator, having now freed myself of the technical preciseness of a photo realistic painting I now paint expressively and creatively, producing paintings that are based on feeling, light, energy and movement. I have a love and passion for weather and landscapes and most of my paintings are subjects that have that connection for me.. I think that one can paint the same scene over and over again as light and weather change the subject continuously. I love painting skies and think they are the key to a great landscape. I have a fascination for storms and extreme weather, whether that is a sunrise at -20 degrees in winter, a snow storm, a stunning sunset or a growing supercell in the height of summer, these are the key elements to my painting. I really am intrigued by skies and have studied them in some detail having gone to great lengths studying a little meteorology and taking to the sky in a light aircraft to get even more information about their three dimensional depth. Clouds are constantly growing, dissipating, moving and changing. I feel very blessed as a person and trained as a classical pianist. Music and Art are very much the same. When I learnt to play the piano, it wasn’t until I had taken care of all the theory and the practice that i could actually play the music with feeling and passion. I could dismiss the notation, and concentrate on the emotion of a piece. I believe art very much the same.. I get to understand my subject, have a connection with it, a love for it and I really do study this carefully. As I develop as an artist, I find myself becoming more abstract with my work thinking more about composition, light and the balance of shapes, prefering to eliminate all the detail.colour and this understanding helps me paint them more authentically. feel very blessed as a person and trained as a classical pianist. What is included?

You will have use of 120GPB worth of pastels including 10 Pan Pastels, a box of Unison/Rembrandt Pastels and a box of Red Box Jackson Pastels + Canson Papers. Jackson's wooden field Easels and Boards are availabe if you require them + Desk Easels for working inside.

The 3 day workshop plus the demonstration costs 225GBP and a Deposit of £150 is required to secure a place on the break ( Places reserved on a first come first served basis). The Balance of 75GBP will be payable 8 weeks prior to the break.

You need to bring:

masking tape or clips to hold your paper on the board
a couple of sketching pencils
an eraser
a sketch book
a brush or something to paint with
a water pot and palette to mix your colours in
some kitchen towel
a comfortable chair for painting outside
all weather gear
flask

Not essential (but recommended):

some watercolours
pastel pencils
inktense sticks
watercolour pencils
basically anthing that you can use to create an underpainting before you pastel
