‘Area of outstanding natural beauty’. With this slogan the people form Northern Ireland try to promote the Antrim coast. And to be honest, it really is true! This coastal strip, about an hour north of Belfast, is a mecca of versatility: beautiful rock formations, deserted beaches, small harbours and the typical green Irish hills in the hinterland. Some landscapes are also known from the popular television series “Game of Thrones”. It is all at your fingertips.

The popular and special Giant’s Causeway, with over 40,000 basalt columns, is a creative testimony of a distant and volcanic past. The scientific explanation of this phenomenon, volcanic activity about 60 million years ago, is certainly interesting, but the myth about the origin of it appeals even more to our imagination as a photographer:

The Irish giant Finn MacCool created a path to Scotland to be able to get in a duell with his Scottish rival, the giant Benandonner. Plans turn out differently. Although the Scottish giant uses the path to get to Ireland, he gets so discouraged over there that he runs like hell back to Scotland, destroying the path behind him.

Besides this beautiful myth as photographers we received an amazing piece of nature given that is perfect for great photography.

Besides nature Northern Ireland offers also much history. There are many mysterious places, stone circles, dolmens and ruins of churches and castles. Often lying in a stunning setting, they also provide opportunities for imaginative creations and experimenting with your photography. We will visit some ruins either situated on the coast or in the hinterland, that sometimes are surrounded by ancient graves that will underline again the mysteries of the ‘old’ Ireland. We will spend much time on every photo location. In some places we will almost be the only people and in other places it can be more crowded. There are however plenty of moments to photograph without the ‘day trippers’.

Photographer Charles Borsboom will guide this photo tour. Charles is not only challenged by nature photography, but he also to photograph people and cultural aspects. And therefore this tour will have a broad orientation. We will be staying in a B & B in Bushmills, situated on a hilltop and a stone’s throw away from Giant’s Causeway. From the B & B you have a beautiful view over the sea and with some luck fantastic sunsets. All photo locations are in reach of our accommodation in Bushmills.
