Camargue's White Horses

16.05.2019 - 19.05.2019 Provence | Tom Way portrait, photography, culture, history, animals, travel, nature 1895 GBP

The Camargue is famous for its beautiful white horses with its wild untamed lakes and lagoons situated along the French coastline. On this photographic trip we will be focusing on capturing these powerful and iconic horses running through the warm waters of the Mediterranean and through marshland. We will also spend time capturing intimate portraits at close quarters.

zItinerary:

Day 1: We look to arrive in Marseille after our international flights in the afternoon and transfer together to our accommodation. After we have settled in we have an evening briefing and discuss the logistics and itinerary for the next few days before having our evening meal.

Day 2: We will be making early starts on this trip and using the light to our advantage. Our first shoot will be based at a nearby lagoon photographing a group of 15 horses running through the water. We will return to our accommodation for a late breakfast and a chance to rest and download our images before lunch. After your break and meal you will have some time to review your images from the morning session and Tom will be on hand if required to help with any critique or processing advice as needed. At around 5pm we will be back out for our second shoot of the day (again using the light to our advantage) to have a session with newborn foals and their mothers. We will then return to our accommodation for an evening meal.

Day 3: This day will follow a similar pattern to the previous with an early start. We will have a dawn shoot on a Mediterranean beach with 3 stallions before making our way back to the accommodation. Our evening shoot we will return to the lagoon to perfect the running through the water images whilst including some time for portraits aswell.

Day 4: On our final morning we will head to a nearby marshland to photograph a group of horses running through deeper water. This location will give you a chance to expand your portfolio with iconic images of the wild horses in action. We will then head back to our hotel for breakfast before taking our transfers back to Marseille.

* Please note this itinerary order may be subject to change depending on weather conditions etc

Equipment/Clothing:

In regards to clothing and weather conditions, it can be pleasant and warm in France at this time of year, but we are on the coast and the weather can be changeable. Temperatures will be anything from 15-25 degrees and so we advise bringing layers. T-shirts and a lightweight fleece are advisable along with a wet coat and light- weight walking trousers. In regards to footwear, there will be occasions where you will have the chance to stand in the water as the horses are running towards you. Wellingtons are strongly recommended. Waders can also be useful.

The hotel does have a pool that can be used in the middle part of the day. Insect repellent can be use-
ful on this trip, as occasionally the mosquitoes are in large numbers if there is no wind on the marsh. Sun cream is recommended. If you have any special dietary requirements, please do let us know.

In regards to camera equipment: Camera body (with a back-up if you have one). A medium to longer zoom lens 70-200, 100-400, 80-400 will be perfect for this trip. We are able to get close to our subjects. You may nd a wider lens is also useful for some of the shooting opportunities but this does very much depend on your style.

If you would like to hire a lens for this workshop I can recommend using Lenses For Hire who have a large range of zoom and prime lenses to choose from. Discount codes are available through Tom Way Photography. Please enquire for more information.
