Zagori (Zagorochoria)

Zagori is a sparsely populated region in northwestern Greece. It contains 46 old villages with unique traditional architecture, known as the Zangori villages or the Zagorochoria. The surrounding environment is characterized by wooded mountains and canyons and presents one of Greece’s most appealing natural landscapes, a large part of it under conservation. Several old monasteries reside on the mountain slopes. The individual villages are connected by narrow, curvy roads and cobbled paths, and many stone bridges lead across numerous streams and rivers. In Zagori also lie the so called Dragon Lakes. It is said that they once have been inhabited by dragons who fought each other by throwing pines and rocks and thereby created the unique landscape.
