Greek Tranquillity

This is about an a Greek island you probably have not heard of yet, an absolute insider tip - this is about Euboea.

When thinking of Greek islands, you probably have places like Rhodes, Crete, Santorin, Mykonos…you name it, in mind. But have you heard of Euboea? It is actually the second largest Greek island next to Crete, but not as popular at all – which makes it a real secret among travellers! A landscape switching from mountains and steep coasts to magnificent hilly sceneries, solitary bays and picturesque little villages and towns, makes it a perfect island for spending your holidays. Since being not as well-known as other Greek islands, it is paid only very little attention by the mass of tourists that visit Greece. It has never reached a spot under the “Top 10 Holiday Destinations”, but that is exactly what makes it attractive. It is spared by huge hotel complexes and mass tourism – finally, a Greek island where you can find perfect relaxation.

And that is what makes Euboea special: the peace and quietness that you would not know from other Greek islands. When you want to visit Greece and get to know its culture, but do not want to enter a place flooded by tourism, Euboea sounds like the perfect destination. There you can find desired calm, solitude in its most picturesque form, flourishing nature and spectacular views. The sea is as clear as you would only know it from the Caribbean, and even in high season you will be able to find a secluded spot at the beach. There are enchanted little towns, culinary specialities, mountains and hills that offer fantastic views to the beauty of Euboea’s sceneries full of colourful flower meadows in front of the dark blue Mediterranean Sea. In a picture-perfect, painting-worthy way, it is almost like the time is standing still or moving in a slower pace and rhythm, that is how much relaxation the island expresses.

If you now fancy a stay in the Greek tranquillity, there are, as mentioned, not as many hotels as there are on other Greek islands. There is, for instance, Eleonas Hotel in the North of the island in Rovies. Eleonas, the Greek word for olive grove, is an eco-conscious small hotel-awarded with Green Key- in an ideal position on a hill, surrounded by an olive grove where informality will never mean compromising on quality. The hotel is a family business, run by husband and wife, and the atmosphere is just as tranquil and uniquely personal as the whole island is.

From the hotel, you can enjoy walks among olive trees or a drive to the waterfalls. You can observe the birds or the wild flowers and get acquainted with the Greek nature’s wealth or exercise yoga under the Greek sun. You can swim from the nearby pebble beach, or you can relax by reading a book from the hotel library. All around you the landscapes and moods and colours are made for painting, so taking an easel and getting inspired by the beauty of the hotel’s surroundings sounds like the perfect plan to refuel on relaxation, inspiration and happiness.

The hotel offers 10 twin/double rooms with breath-taking views to the sea, serve delicious, local delicatessen for breakfast, olives from the farm, and eggs from the coop and cook Greek traditional recipes with their home-made olive oil for dinner. The hotel is a three hours’ drive far from Athens airport (180km) and there is a public bus transport from Athens bus terminal to Rovies three times a day.
